Day +88.......Biopsy Result Good, Return to DMU for a Short Stay

by moira603 @ Sunday, Jul. 16, 2006 - 07:39:26 pm

Quick update from Russell....

Moira moved back to the DMU ward today, to assure quality delivery of remaining CMV and VOD drugs over next couple of weeks and to monitor response to 2nd infusion of Mylotarg given last Tuesday....DMU has more experienced/specialised nursing care than Guthrie plus positive pressure room with an AC to combat dehydration/hot weather.

Last week was a tough week waiting on the results of latest Biopsy to evaulate impact of Mylotarg on remaining leukaemic cells spotted at previous biopsy, thanks to Moira's Mum, Lynda, Claire and Ali et al. for helping out and feeding the boys...........

Yes the biopsy results were good............<10% abnormal cells, confirming theMylotarg working. The 2nd infusion is designed to nail the rest of the bastards.

I was away in Cairo last week packing up the house, flew out Saturday, one days prep on Sunday (aided by Ross and Elliott, plus Nela, Abdou, Lisa, Heike – thanks to all of you), then packers in (help from Aine – thanks again, kept me cool and sane), all done by Thursday 5pm, boy was it hot (2 days at 47degC), sad to leave, but felt good to have one less thing to manage - even managed an overnight trip to Moon Beach to windsurf my heart out on Friday before returning home Saturday, so don't feel too sorry for me.

We are hoping to get thru this phase of treatment by end July..........there is then a further piece of treatment aimed at finishing off the abnormal cells (longterm).....this will involve the use of Alpha-Interferon to stimulate the new/donor's immune system to attack any remaining abnormal/leukaemic cells. This will take place late July/early August and may make Moira quite ill again (mega Flu like symptoms are the principal side effect). The Dr’s and the Charismatic Prof Mufti seem very positive about the prognosis and want to hold back from using a Donor Lymphocyte Infusion at this stage (something that had been on the agenda, but would take time to line up).

That’s enough technical stuff for now……….on the home front I am off up to the new house to start the building contractor for the roof off tomorrow, then am taking 3 of the boys to see the Red Hot Chilli Peppers at Earls Court on Tuesday night……a nice break from being at home, seeing Mum in hospital and the odd skateboarding expedition around the South Bank………….I think we will do the Motor Show and the F1 exhibition at the Design Museum this next couple of weeks too.

Keep up the comments and support, it all makes a huge difference in keeping us positive and moving forward a day at a time………..we will get there in the end.

Love Russell & Moira.

I'm so glad that things are improving. It's very good news, and I look forward to the day that you'll be posting that there is no more leukemia. I think Moira has been very brave. Well done, Moira.
Hugs,
GS

Good to know you are safely back Russ,Moira needs you and misses you so much when youre away, just as I miss Mum,when shes away, but Im reasonably healthy, and not confined to hospital environs, which must be so frustrating for Mo after such a long time.Have good time with those men of yours love to you all Dad xxxxx

Hey Mo,
Thanks for the update Russ - bit too technical and scary for me...but I get the gist of it...still more pain before the gain...but THERE is LIGHT at the end of the tunnel...
I'm sure you're going bonkers being banged up in DMU, but thank goodness you've got an A/C room Mo...it's really hot out here...even in Aberdeen and Braemar...scorcheo...had to retire to the Dee and loll about in it's (very) cooling waters yesterday and today....but I'm told by my menfolk that the Dee is much much warmer than the sea off Colonsay...not quite as gripping....not sure what they're talking about!
So now you have to trust Russ with the colour choices at the GBH...mmmm bit dodgy, but I guess needs must...you do know he's colour blind don't you?
I really, really don't want to go back to work tomorrow...lucky Tom has 5 more weeks of doing nothing much...looking forward to the return of Ben the adventurer next Monday.....
Shall I send some more knitting for you to do????
Monster hugs and big love,
R&Txxxx

More than a quick update...well done Russell, thanks for that. Bet you're an expert at that Waitrose order too by now.
Keep going guys, one day at a time! I know you'll get there. Enjoy the a/c Moira, the world's getting hotter day by day. The children have rooted into the pool and Phil's parents arrive tomorrow. Phil is here for the week, took delivery of his new toy yesterday so played happily most of today - even in 35 degrees plus - a convertible Husqvarna..so that's his 40th sorted!! Who needs a porsche?!
When you're up to it I'll be over with the kitchen catalogues - that'll be the next project now that all the bathrooms are done.
Hugs for you all

Well I've done it! A miniscule effort compared with your labours in Kings. Today I raced for life with 3000 women 5km around Hereford race course. The best bit was being supported by Ken the personal trainer and Henry the physio.(Main job-helping to eat all the free snacks from the goody bag post race) Will telling me he was proud of me. and wearing my medal all day. I was thinking of you Moira all the way, about how determined and resiliant you are, how patient' and even though your body is being battered you still give to us all.

Took a gang of boys to the river to cool off in the afternoon-no Lampreys today. Last week at school for Henry and me. It's going to be a hot one. Fred and Will off to Aberystwyth to do work on Uncle Mike's student house. Elliott looking forward to seeing the Malvern house. He's a lovely young man-Who brought him up?

Got tickets for Motor show perhaps could link up for trip?
Hope to see you soon love Amanda and Ken xxxxxxxx

Mo,
Why does it seem sooo unfair to be working when the sun in shining????
But then again, it is soooo unfair to be banged up in hospital when the sun is shining and the boys (oops sorry handsome young men) are off school...
So I'll quit moaning and get back to work...
Be good and stay strong...

Hi to you both,
Thanks for the good news - gives us all a big smile on our faces to read.
I completed the race for life at Dorney last week on a very warm Wednesday evening - you kept me going Moira - so well done again!
Tomorrow we are taking 90 five to seven year olds to the Cotswold Wildlife Park - the joys of working in primary school. Sent out the idiots letter to the parents today to point out that it is hot and to check the kids are prepared - what are the odds that some will come without sun hats or a drink?
Term ends Thursday with a few inset days to follow and then wind down before getting wound up full time for my teacher training course!
Hope to see you very soon.
Angharad was thrilled to get your birthday greetings last week - thankyou. She is off on her Duke of Edinburgh's Gold practice expedition this next week - that will keep her busy!
Enjoy the a/c.
Love from us all S M A and T xxxxxxx

Russell:

Thanks so much for the update; send some of that hot weather over here to Alaska, will ya, people?

Moira, still haven't gone in the lake. No fun without you to help me make a spectacle of myself!

As always, sending positive thoughts your way. Hope to see you soon. Is that cryptic? Not really, I just really want to come over ..............

Hope they've kicked the a/c back into action for you. Ellie has a good song one of the lines being..."when life makes you sweat wear deoderant..deoderant"

Your birthday cards arrived safely you wonderous woman, am still hugging you and sending calming vibes of love....you will be cooking on that aga.....the smelly socks are piling up....just a bit more sweating to go first. Of course I wish there wasn't but it's a rocky old road...keep plodding girl...you're doing fantastic. Still an inspiration to us all.

Boy, is it hot here Moira, there is nothing but flies and the like around all the horses and parts of me. It was so good to read Russell's update, I am coming down to London next week and would love to see you or wave at you or whatever is best. If you would prefer not to, then I will just blow you a kiss from Guildford. Just let me know via the Blog and I shall do whatever - big fat snogs from Carry et al.

Hey Mo
Sizzling hot here after 2 days of mist & fog...Who would have thought we could use sea-fog as an attractive reason for folk to move to Aberdeen?...well that's climate change for you...wish I could send you a bag of har to keep you cool down there in the DMU...(also a bag of hair for those stepping-out days which will surely come soon!!!)
Think of you often, praying your a/c is working and that your every whim is being pampered - in addition to all the healing and zapping of VODs and sods in your system.
Look forward to entertaining one of your handsome entourage next week.
Big snat fogs from Rosy et al.

Thanks for such a brilliant update Russell-even if I couldn't understand every 3rd word! Windsurfing in Egypt though might top a canoe trip around Applecross Bay! Glad to hear you had some time to play Russell. Moira, you must be so relieved to hear such positive news. You must be sweltering too! But just a little bit longer to put up with this-the end is in sight. Whey hey!

Dear Russ and Moira,

A great update Russ, we have been thinking of you all down-under, all our problems of job searching pale into comparison with the battle you are waging - keep it going YOU WILL SUCCEED! Love that a/c - you could retreat down here - it's pretty damn cold today in New Plymouth with snow shrowding our spectacular Fuji-like mountain. Plenty of skiing to be had but the kids are back at school so Ross is chomping at the bit!
Jamie has arrived back to the UK from Svalbard safely and is now living with my Mum in Sunningdale. He had a simply fantastic time up there and is now working already - bar staff at a great restaurant locally, before he finds his direction in life - no Uni. next year I don't think - but as we don't know where we will be maybe that's just as well - we didn't really want him coming back to NZ if we aren't going to be here! He is driving Granny up the wall a bit - late nights and teenager traites!!
Keep going Moira - we know you will beat this b......d! We send our prayers to you all and our love, Karen, Dave Ross x x x and Jamie from England too!!
